A small space refrigerator with unexpected storage zones

A common refrigerator has two zones, a cold zone, and a warm zone. The warm zone is for food storage. The cold zone is for cooling the warm zone.
If you look at the inside of a refrigerator, you can see this immediately. The warm zone is where the food is, and the walls are lined with shelves to hold the food. The cold zone is the area behind the shelves, which contains the mechanism that cools the air in the war zone.

The warming function of a refrigerator (warming up the air inside) has very little to do with its cooling function (cooling down the food). It’s possible to build fridges that don’t heat up much at all; they keep things cool by circulating refrigerant through coils in what would otherwise be empty space. This is more efficient than using coils in contact with air, but it means you can only put things on top of it if you want them warmed up too.

It turns out that there are other places in a fridge that are warmer than you might expect: behind or around some of the vents that bring in cool air, for example. These are not normally used for storing food, though they sometimes get used for things like pots of yogurt or bacon fat that might spoil otherwise.

The rest of the refrigerator is a series of storage zones. The upper part is for vegetables and fruit; in my unit, they fill up about half the space. You can fit a couple of bunches of celery and a few heads of lettuce in there without crushing them, and they stay fresh for days.
The bottom part holds meat and fish, but we almost never use it. The only way we could fit anything more in there would be if we stopped eating meat or fish.
