18-inch wide small space dishwasher
We usually think of small appliances like dishwashers as convenient appliances, like toasters and coffee makers. They complement our kitchens, rather than dominating them, like refrigerators and stoves.
But dishwashers are different. Dishwashers are actually an excellent example of a small appliance that is too convenient. Because dishwashers save time, and saving money is the main reason people buy dishwashers.
When dishwashers first came out, they were large and expensive. But people used them anyway, because how much time would you save? At first, not much. You still had to wash the dishes by hand. But then dishwashers got smaller and more efficient, and people started buying them. Now dishwashers can wash up to 14 racks of dishes an hour. And even that isn’t fast enough.
Actually, no. The 14 racks an hour is the maximum. Most of us throw more dishes into the dishwasher than can fit. And only 10 percent of us even fill it all the way. So if our dishwasher is 18 inches wide, it usually has room to fit 10 racks of dishes. And if our dishwasher is 24 inches wide, it usually has room to fit 12 racks of dishes.
Dishwashers are too convenient. In fact, they are so convenient, that having to wash dishes by hand occasionally is actually good for us. We don’t need dishwashers to make washing dishes more convenient; we have them because the alternative is worse.
A dishwasher is a machine for washing dishes and other flatware. The dishwasher was invented in 1904 by Carl B. Allen, a dishwasher salesman, and introduced in 1905. The first dishwashers were large, expensive machines that required running water. First introduced in 1930, the compact dishwasher was small enough to fit in a 12-inch square kitchen but was still expensive. Compact dishwashers were widely used in the 1960s and 1970s, but many of them were energy inefficient.
